The Old G’s Super 2s are back in action this week after a much needed week off. With the club going through somewhat of an injury crisis selection was interesting to say the least. Some players are being rewarded with opportunities in the 1st XV while others are making returns to action to see the respective league campaigns stay alive.
Captain Russel Allen and Vice Will McArthur have pulled it out of the bag again and the 2s will be marching out onto the field to face a strong opponent in Canterbury.
The front row for such an occasion resembles the most French outfit seen in many years at Old G’s with Matt Vickery being joined by Stu Coleman at Hook and Phill “Fred” Boyer on the other side. The engine for this beat has to be powerful and with Derek Brown and Harry Ballantyne there should be just enough power to get the weight shifting. The flanks are made up of Ben Randall and Joe Fathers… no that isn’t a typo!! Darrell Conlan will be fulfilling his usual role at no. 8.
Andy Hinde steps out of the scrum and back into the 9 shirt, a position he is very comfortable in. John Poulson, fresh off masterminding the backs of the victorious Vets team last week steps in at 10, he will be providing service to the bash brothers in the centres. Usually found having a cuddle in the 2nd row Martin Povey and Tom Hammerton are taking up role in the backs and will look to add to their try tally with both of them sitting near the top of the points list this season.
An abundance of pace can be found on the wings and at Full back with Axel Elcome, Joe Wortham and Conor Fenlon. If the ball gets out wide there is some real pace and plenty of scoring potential stored up. In his last game, Conor Fenlon played a full 80 for the 2s before walking over to the 1st team pitch and playing another full 80 and scoring a hat trick on his debut in the process…
The replacements are a blast from the past with Nick Carter, Will Tann and Tom Goodall all stepping in to play, they join Mick Caveney.
Once again thank you to everyone who has made the commitment to play as well as Russel Allen, Will McArthur, Joe Fathers and John Poulson who have worked hard to get the side together.
