It’s the new year and time to kick start the 1nd half of the season and the Super 2’s find themselves up against one of the only teams that has kept them at bay this season, Gillingham Anchorians.
Earlier on in the season inexperience cost the old boys the game as a well drilled Gillingham side ran in multiple tries in quick succession and despite a strong comeback Old G’s couldn’t get back in touch. With incredible sights like Poveys sidestep and Joe Wortham calling a great blind side ball on their way to respective tries this game shows promise of another great clash with both teams wanting the victory to get their year off to the best start possible.
With Captain Russell Allen out for the rest of the season after picking up a particularly nasty leg break in the last fixture, it is Will McArthur who steps in as captain. Will has been left with a strong side and will be pushing to continue what Russell has started.
Mick Caverney starts in the front row alongside Harry, too many names, Ballantyne and a returning Ross Coleman who has been made available by club coach Andy Miller in order to get some game time. The engine room is made up of yet another combination consisting this time of 2nd top try scorer Martin Povey and Derek Brown who has come in to replace the “too ill to play” Andy Day, Povey had a very good showing against Gillingham and is looking to regain top spot on the scoreboard with a similar performance.
Jordan Lynch is buddying up with the versatile Sam Snell on the flanks with Andy Hinde running the pack from Number 8.
Doug Wilson in at Scrum Half will be giving service to Liam Cole at Fly Half. The centres are made up of the young and the old with Will McArthur and Mike Hodge lining up next to eachother, Mike will teach Will everything he knows, including how to pull off the Rangy… Steve “Mr T” Thompson is on one wing with Brad Millbank occupying the other. A lot of discussion was had about who would be playing Full Back this week with various names being thrown about before Richard Parish was made available for selection to complete a strong team on paper.
The replacements are Stu Coleman, Matt Vickery and Axle Elcome.
With both teams at home this week there is no better time to get down to your local club and watch some rugby! Meet time 12 for a 2pm Kick off.
