Old Gs kick off 2024 with a win

Olds started 2024 with a positive win at home against Medway 3s on Saturday. Tries from Grant Roe x2, Andy Morris and Matt Johnson were enough to secure a 23-0 win.

Old Gs kicked off down the slope and started well, forcing a penalty which Matt Holdstock converted for an early 3-0 lead. They remained positive and surged back forward with Danny, Snaith, Ash Bourne and Chris Johnson combining to send Grant Roe over the whitewash. 8-0.

Medway weren't here to gift Old Gs the win though and moved themselves up the field, securing good field position and threatening the Old Gs line. But the home side defence was well organised and held firm, keeping the shut out until half time.

Into the second period Old Gs were determined to step up their attacking from the first half and started to improve their ball retention. Possession was moved through the hands of the backline for Grant Roe who kicked ahead and collected to dive over for his second.

Another soon followed as the pack secured a catch and drive lineout and powered over, with Andy Morris the scorer.

Medway kept fighting and put Old Gs on the back foot, their half backs combining well and linking with their forwards to test the Old Gs defence. Once again Old Gs were in no mood to give up a score, and their minds tuned towards a bonus point try, that could prove crucial come the end of the season.

And it duly arrived with 3minutes to play. An overthrown lineout was collected by Mat Coomber, who set off up field. He shipped the ball to the supporting Matt Johnson who finished well.

Final score: Old Gs 23 Medway 0.

Far from the perfect performance from Old Gs, as they shook off the cobwebs from the festive period. Positive was the resolute defence, that was strong throughout. But the attack will need to improve as they look ahead to tougher challenges that await in the next few weeks.
