In bitterly cold conditions Old Gs ground out a tight 13-5 victory vs Old Williamsonians. Tries from Grant Roe and Chris Johnson were enough to seal victory in a stop start contest where neither side will feel they put in their best performance.
Old Wills started strong and controlled the opening 20 minutes, taking a well deserved lead when their 9 sniped over from close range, after strong work from their powerful forward runners.
Old Gs gradually came into the game and despite a yellow card for Phil Costley, they drew level when Grant Roe slid over in the corner after good hands down the backline, following the multiple phases and ball retention that had been lacking in the opening exchanges.
Despite further Old Gs pressure all they had to reflect this was a penalty from Matt Holdstock on the stroke of half time, for an 8-5 lead.
Old Gs came firing out the blocks in the second half, unrecognisable from the sloth like showing from the opening passage of the game. The upturn in form paid off as Chris Johnson breezed over to dot down following some nice footwork - 13-5.
The rest of the game was played in central areas of the field and despite Old Gs being held up over the line a couple of times they couldn’t force a further score.
Defence was good as they repelled the Old Wills efforts - and despite further 10 minute breaks for Chris Daniels, Ash Bourne and Jordan Lynch, they held firm to secure an important victory.
Old Wills never quite looked like making the game much closer - and despite plenty of the ball, the away side couldnt crack the organised Old Gs - which held off any threat.
